Title : Dreaming with whales

Artist : Cha Sophia

Year : 2023

Material / Medium : Acrylic paint

Size of Artwork : 53cm X 45.5 cm

Award : Silver Medal

Description of Artwork :

While I've always been an imaginative child, I became particularly immersed in the various worlds I would create in my head and from the books I read during Covid 19 quarantine. This piece reflects the way that I would submerge myself into my own worlds as opposed to the real one, represented by the submerged cityscape. Whales are often associated with solitude and unbridled curiosity, both things that were a big part of my experiences during quarantine. Using various colours to paint my face, I wished to convey the lack of normalcy I experienced during those times: because 2020 had been such a abnormal time it seemed fitting that instead of realistically painting my face, I would take stylistic liberties like messy brushstrokes and colours like pink and purple.

Title : Forwards

Artist : Yang Seoyeon

Year : 2023

Material / Medium : Acrylic on canvas

Size of Artwork : 50 x 65 cm

Award : Silver Medal

Description of Artwork :

This piece was inspired by a core memory of mine. When I was younger, I visited an aquarium with my family, and we came across a large cylindrical tank in which hundreds of fish were swimming in the same direction. However, there was one fish that was swimming in the opposite direction from the others. My mother told me to follow the norm and never “become that fish”. However, I now believe that in order to succeed, especially in areas that require creativity like art, I need to think differently from everyone else. At first glance, most people would think that the fish swimming in the direction opposite from everyone else was going backward, but in reality, that fish may have been swimming forwards.

Title :

Artist : Kim SiYeon

Year : 2023

Material / Medium : Acrylic painting on canvas

Size of Artwork : 53cm X 45.5 cm

Award : Silver Medal

Description of Artwork :

Title :

Artist : Shin Kevin

Year : 2023/2/15

Material / Medium : Acrylic paint

Size of Artwork : 53cm X 45.5 cm

Award : Silver Medal

Description of Artwork :

Title : blow it out

Artist : Lee Ina Yoonseo

Year : 2023

Material / Medium : Acrylic paint

Size of Artwork : 53cm X 45.5 cm

Award : Silver Medal

Description of Artwork :

Time is always passing, it's constant and stable. Yet the occurrences in my reality is not parallel to this, showing a negative correlation to the impacts of coming of age. It's a battle with time, a fight between it and i. Despite the glaring flame on my birthday, what I see is only a muted light to a candle barely present. Blow it out is the hushed acceptance of time and its presence.

Title : Panorama

Artist : Jang Riwon

Year : 2023

Material / Medium : acrylic paint

Size of Artwork : 53cm X 45.5 cm

Award : Silver Medal

Description of Artwork :

Whether they are good memories or bad memories, memories tend to fade over time and become less vivid. My painting portrays the tragedy of fading memories; despite our effort to hold on to happy memories, it is inevitable that they will become more murky over time. In this painting, the film photos that are surrounding the girl represent my happiest moments. The girl’s hand is reaching out to the photos in an attempt to catch them before they fade away. The blind fold that is covering her eyes symbolizes the girl’s inability to see faded memories. The dark background also represents the process of memories disappearing. The girl symbolizes my present self who deeply cherishes the happy moments that occur in her daily life and is desperately wanting to hold on to them. I put the memories that I wanted to remember and liked in the picture. The life passing like a lantern was compared to a scene in a movie film. Also, in the painting, I'm wandering through fading memories.

Title : 어항

Artist : Ahn Seonwoo

Year : 2023.2.15

Material / Medium : Acrylic paint

Size of Artwork : 53cm X 45.5 cm

Award : Silver Medal

Description of Artwork :

Title : 3 + 1 Demension
Artist : Park Matthew sunghyun

Year : 2023

Material / Medium : Mixed Media

Size of Artwork : 53cm X 45.5 cm

Award : Silver Medal

Description of Artwork :

Title : Shooting Star

Artist : Lim Seungsoo

Year : 2023

Material / Medium : Acrylic Painting

Size of Artwork : 53cm x 40.9cm

Award : Silver Medal

Description of Artwork :

Title : Trapped in an Illusion: A Life Unlived

Artist : Hana Kopp

Year : 2023

Material / Medium : Acrylic Painting

Size of Artwork : 53cm X 45.5 cm

Award : Silver Medal

Description of Artwork :

“Trapped in an Illusion: A Life Unlived” is a thought-provoking piece that was painted with the uses of surrealistic imagery in order to explore the theme of disillusionment and detachment. The distorted nature of the mirrored faces being warped together suggests the emotional toll that being burnout can have on an individual. The two moments of this girls life symbolizes the feeling of being trapped in a cycle of stress, which she is unable to break free. I was inspired to create this piece, as my junior year of high school offers a lot of struggles dealing with how I should manage my energy where it got to a point that art which was considered a safe place no longer helped with me feeling burnout. So with this piece, I wanted to create something that I could funnel my emotions into and to explore a style of portraiture that I have yet to explore through the manipulation of realistic features.

Title : <

Artist : Cha Emma (Yeryeong)

Year : 2023

Material / Medium : Acrylic paint

Size of Artwork : 394mm x 545mm

Award : Silver Medal

Description of Artwork :

Title : Worst of Both Worlds

Artist : Lee Jihwan

Year : 2023

Material / Medium : Color pencils, acrylic paint

Size of Artwork : 39.4cm x 54.5cm

Award : Silver Medal

Description of Artwork :

During the pandemic, I’ve indulged myself more and more in Western culture, thus, becoming distant from my Korean culture. When I crawled out of isolation, however, I found myself feeling more isolated than I had been prior - I didn’t fit into either group. This work displays the confusion and anxiety I felt, as shown by my face melting and frittering away. I painted myself in a chaotic mix of colors that usually wouldn’t harmonize, but in this case, they do, illustrating how the two different contrasting cultures constitute my identity. The addition of the third eye on my cheek is a metaphor for the new epiphany I had of how different the two cultures are. This concept is represented by the juxtaposition of the two art styles in the background - the top half being the depiction of the Korean utopia, and the bottom half being the depiction of the Western utopia. Lastly, the calming sunset and the ocean in my body portray the equilibrium I hope to one day reach between my two halves.

Title : Day 6 of Quarantine

Artist : Lee Yujin

Year : 2023

Material / Medium : acrylic paint

Size of Artwork : 54.5 x 39.4cm

Award : Silver Medal

Description of Artwork :

The past three years of the pandemic left me with mixed feelings. On one hand, I felt lonely and isolated in my room. I also realized that being alone means more time to explore my interests and hobbies. In this painting, I portrayed my indoor experiences through each figure immersed in a routine of various activities.

For example, the figure sitting in the right corner of the room represents how I feel about quarantine. The shadow of a teddy bear on the wall symbolizes my depression from extended periods of quarantine. Teddy bears are placed around my room to emphasize my loneliness when surrounded by inanimate objects. This piece ultimately conveys my efforts to overcome loneliness. Despite the diverse range of activities, the indifferent facial expressions show my persistent struggles with feelings of sadness and boredom. Three years into the pandemic and my room alone have given me personal freedoms in exchange for losing time with my friends, family, and life before COVID-19.

Title :

Artist : Kim Leah

Year : 2023년 2월 15일

Material / Medium :

Size of Artwork : 12호

Award : Silver Medal

Description of Artwork :

Title :

Artist : Kim Elleisha

Year : 2023년 2월 14일

Material / Medium :

Size of Artwork : 4절

Award : Silver Medal

Description of Artwork :

Title : The eagle's mask

Artist : Jo Jaehoon

Year : 2023

Material / Medium : acrylic paint

Size of Artwork : 53cm X 45.5 cm

Award : Silver Medal

Description of Artwork :

My current self, which takes up 90% of my life experience, is like an eagle during my school days. I had no choice but to wear the "feathers" of the eagle as I watched my friends get bullied. I had to try to look like a brave eagle even though I was timid and quiet. After using up half of my time pretending to be this eagle, I soon realized that wearing a mask was not the solution. Slowly, I took off the mask and started spending my time as my true self. Now I no longer need the eagle's mask.

Title : Breakthrough

Artist : Cho Yeshin

Year : 2023

Material / Medium : Canvas, Acrylic paint

Size of Artwork : 53cm X 45.5 cm

Award : Silver Medal

Description of Artwork :

I will define my 3 years as a ‘breakthrough’. Breakthrough has a lot of meanings. It has the meaning of success, innovation, and discovery. Fifteen years old, I felt trapped by covid. I was not able to socialize, was not doing exercise, and was not studying at all. Sometimes I became lethargic, even with my hobby, art too. However, we finally started to make some ‘breakthroughs’. People invented a vaccine for covid, and the situation got way better even though we suffered some difficulties. From the start of 2023, we now are beginning a new life. In this painting, I put the message of breaking through the wall that trapped me for a long time.
